Social media platform X changes Iran flag emoji amid protests

(MENAFN) US social media company X updated its Iran flag emoji on the web platform, replacing the current emblem of the Islamic Republic with the historic Lion and Sun symbol amid ongoing nationwide protests.

The previous emoji reflected Iran’s official flag, featuring the red emblem adopted after the 1979 revolution. The new design shows the lion and sun motif, historically used on Iran’s national flag for centuries before the revolution and commonly associated with the country’s pre-revolutionary era.

Following the update, the new emoji began appearing on the X accounts of Iranian state institutions and officials, including state-linked media accounts. On the platform’s web version, all instances of the Iran flag emoji now display the Lion and Sun, regardless of when the post was made. Other platforms, however, continue to show the official Iranian flag.

Separately, Elon Musk and SpaceX activated Starlink satellite internet in Iran, providing free access for an unspecified period amid the country’s internet blackout.

Protests have swept Iran since late December, sparked by a sharp decline in the Iranian rial and worsening economic conditions. Demonstrations began near Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on Dec. 28 and have spread to multiple cities.
