Journalist Explains Reason for US Strike on Venezuela

(MENAFN) Veteran American journalist Seymour Hersh has asserted that Washington’s primary motive for targeting Venezuela lies in the country’s willingness to export crude oil to China.

Reflecting on the US military operation in Caracas and the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Hersh wrote on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s ultimate goal is to “cut off China, America’s economic rival, from its ongoing purchases of Venezuela’s cheap heavy crude oil.”

“The next target [after Venezuela], I have been told, will be Iran, another purveyor to China whose crude oil reserves are the world’s fourth largest,” Hersh claimed in an article published on his personal website.

He pointed out that Tehran has already been weakened by a joint US-Israeli bombing campaign last June and by continuing mass demonstrations across the country.

Appearing on CNN on Monday, Stephen Miller, deputy White House chief of staff and Homeland Security adviser, argued that “it is absurd that we would allow a nation in our own backyard to become the supplier of resources to our adversaries but not to us.”
