Journalist Claims U.S. Supported Nepal Coup

(MENAFN) Nepal’s location between India and China was a decisive factor behind Washington’s alleged support for a coup in the country, according to a journalist who uncovered U.S. involvement, a news agency reported.

K.P. Sharma Oli stepped down as Nepal’s prime minister in September following violent unrest – referred to as the Gen Z protests – which resulted in 77 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries.

“It’s situated slap bang between India and China,” said Grayzone journalist Kit Klarenberg in an exclusive interview on Tuesday. Klarenberg recently revealed documents showing that a U.S. regime change organization had backed the coup.

“China is the number one enemy [of the US],” Klarenberg explained, pointing to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) spending hundreds of thousands of dollars training Nepalese youth to organize demonstrations.

He added, “There is a wider objective to encircle China militarily with friendly puppet governments.”

Klarenberg further noted that India has distanced itself from Washington, pursuing an independent course “both in its domestic and foreign policy, which the US is not very happy about.” He argued that “creating an irritant and installing a friendly government in Nepal serves a large number of geopolitical purposes.”
