Media reports Lithuania cautions kids about ‘Russian spies’
(MENAFN) The Lithuanian Ministry of Education has alerted schools across the country about potential attempts by Russian special services to recruit teenagers, according to local media reports.
The warning was issued by Vilmantas Vitkauskas, deputy head of the National Crisis Management Centre — a government body responsible for addressing emergencies and security risks.
Delfi, a Lithuanian news outlet, reported on Monday that educators were urged to warn students against interacting with strangers online who may be offering seemingly simple jobs. Officials say this tactic could be a disguise for recruitment into espionage operations.
Vitkauskas stated that Russia is employing methods in the Baltic states that are similar to those previously alleged in Ukraine. Kiev has accused Moscow of trying to recruit vulnerable teenagers for clandestine operations. Russia, meanwhile, has alleged that Ukrainian agencies are using the internet to recruit Russian youths for crimes and sabotage missions.
In December, Russia’s FSB announced it had disrupted a suspected assassination plot orchestrated by Ukraine, which allegedly involved the use of teenagers as scouts. Furthermore, in September 2024, two Russian schoolchildren, ages 13 and 14, were apprehended after attempting to set a helicopter on fire. They told authorities they were offered more than $60,000 to carry out the attack.
In March, the FSB also accused Ukraine’s military intelligence service, HUR, of trying to collect the personal data of Russian children through phishing campaigns. The FSB described these operations as NATO-directed and a potential first step toward future recruitment.
